New Charity Partner

Pedal for Scotland returns in 2009 with a new charity partner – Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres.

What is a Maggie's Centre?

A Maggie’s Centre is a place to turn to for help with any of the problems, small or large, associated with cancer.

Under one roof you can access help with information, benefits advice, psychological support both individually and in groups, courses and stress reducing strategies.  You don’t have to make an appointment, or be referred and everything we offer is free of charge.

Maggie's is there for anybody who feels the need for help, which includes those who love and look after someone with cancer, who often feel as frightened and vulnerable as those who actually have the disease.

A Maggie’s Centre will be many things to many people.  It is there for anybody to use in the way they want to. There isn’t a one size fits all recipe for how you live with cancer. Everybody needs to find their own way.

The job of the staff at Maggie’s is to listen to you, to help you find out what you want and give you the tools to help yourself. Find out more at www.maggiescentres.org/

Year of the Woman

Sustrans are supporting Pedal for Scotland again this year, and the ride will again make use of the fantastic National Cycle Network, which is developed and maintained by Sustrans.

2009 is also Sustrans Year of the Woman, which aims to bring more women into the often male-dominated world of cycling. Female participation in Pedal for Scotland jumped from 17% to 32% last year, so support Sustrans’ campaign and tell your mums, aunties, sisters and female friends to come along – why let the blokes have all the fun?

Other Cycling Events…

If you fancy some practice ahead of Pedal for Scotland, here are some other cycling events you may want to try:

Sunday 5 April

The official closing date (8 March) for the Chris Hoy Edinburgh Half Marathon is fast approaching.  Time is running out if you or your friends or family want to take part.  If you’re not fit enough for the ‘full half’ why not tackle the distance with a friend in the team relay – one runs to Musselburgh racecourse, the second runs out from the racecourse and back, so you’ll both finish in the same place!

Or you might choose to cycle from Meadowbank to Musselburgh (6.7 miles) – please see the Edinburgh website for details - www.edinburgh-half.co.uk

Words from Chris Hoy
"This is great for both sports and can only encourage more people of all ages to adopt a healthier, more active lifestyle. I invite families, friends, workmates to dust down their bikes or put on their trainers and join in with this innovative event on Sunday 5 April."

Maggie’s Monster Bike & Hike is now in its 6th year and is a 24-hour fundraising team challenge.  The event goes from Fort William through to Inverness covering 73 miles along the Great Glen Way. Teams of men, women, colleagues, friends and families are all invited to take part.  Teams must be a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 6 and all participants must be over 18 years of age.

Teams will bike 30 miles and can then choose to hike 8 miles to our Bronze finish, 22 miles to our Silver finish or go the whole way and walk 43 miles to our Gold finish! Maggie’s staff will be on hand throughout the event to provide a smile and support to those taking on the challenge.
