7003 riders set off from Glasgow Green in the glorious sunshine to take part in the biggest and best freshnlo Pedal for Scotland yet. Our 11th Glasgow to Edinburgh bike ride saw numbers increase from 5700 last year - a 23% increase. The sun split the sky on both sides of the country (with a helpful bit of cloud along the route to keep everyone cool) and the event went safely and smoothly.
YouTube stunt biking superstar Danny McAskill was at both the start for the media launch (pictured) and at the finish in Edinburgh performing 3 full shows. The event attracted great media coverage as always with pieces in the Sun, The Herald, The Scotsman, The Metro and the Dundee Courier and Advertiser, and was featured on BBC Radio Scotland's Fred Macauley Show and the BBC Online Big Picture.
Cycling Scotland would like to thank everybody who took part yesterday for making it such a great day, and we'd also like to thank our sponsors freshnlo, Sustrans, Scotmid and Healthier Scotland, as well as the charity partner Maggie's and all the volunteers they provided and all the cycle retailers who provided mechanical support.
Pedal for Scotland 2008 was named the best Leisure Sporting Event of the year at the Scottish Event Awards last night (Friday 11th September 2009)
Cycling Scotland's Glasgow to Edinburgh bike ride beat off the The Homecoming Scottish Cup Final and the 18th Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships to claim the prize for the best Sports Event of the year.
The 2008 Pedal for Scotland marked the event's tenth anniversary, and set a new record for participation in a cycling event in Scotland, attracting a record 5700 riders to make it the biggest bike ride ever to take place in Scotland. Not to rest on our laurels, the event returns tomorrow (Sunday 13th September) as freshnlo Pedal for Scotland, sponsored by Wiseman Dairies brand of semi-skimmed milk, and is set to attract around 7000 riders.

freshnlo Pedal for Scotland is pleased to announce that charity partner Maggie's Cancer Caring Centres has raised over £170,000 so far from the 2009 event. If you still have funds to send in please send them to Maggie’s Events Team, Maggie’s Centres, 8 Newton Place, Glasgow, G3 7PR.
